Photonics Laboratory

The technology for the optical fibre sensors development, optical systems and networks are focused on research and development in Opto-fibre sensor systems and networks.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art measuring technology, which enables the measurement of electrical and optical signals and the possibilities of incorporating optical sensors in specific sensor networks applications in transport or geotechnics. Another area is the properties detection of optical fibres in terms of statistical changes in the optical signal caused by stochastic processes such as PMD. The laboratory has an optical network with a total length of 900 km or more and its reconfiguration.

Time measurements of electrical and optical signals

Time measurement is possible when using the Teledyne LeCroy LabMaster 10-36ZI state-of-the-art oscilloscope, and the IQScope-RT coherent optical signal analyser enables the display of time courses of both electrical and optic signals. In the electrical field, the oscilloscope achieves a bandwidth of 36 GHz and a sampling rate of up to 75 GS / s per channel. In the optical area, it is possible to work with a bandwidth of more than 43 GHz and a sampling rate of up to 150 GS / s. These parameters allow the measurement of coherent optical signals up to 640 Gb / s per channel (DP-16QAM).

Spectral measurement of electrical and optical signals

From the point of view of measuring and analysing the spectral properties of signals, the laboratory is equipped with two optical and one electrical spectrum analyser. These are Yokogawa AQ6370C, Thorlabs OSA203 and Rodhe and Schwartz R & S®FSU46. In the optical region, it’s possible to measure spectra in the range from 600 to 2400 nm and in the electrical range from 20 Hz to 46 GHz.

Other technology options

The technology provides support to the digitalization of objects and production elements and logistics systems for industrial applications. The laser scanner enables precise targeting of the spatial information about scanned objects in a 3D display with high work productivity compared to conventional methods. Another part of technology is software for building intelligent electronic and physical archives with the possibility of centralized physical and electronic storage, control and security of data. Analytical and visualization tool connected to centralized storage of scientific research documents supports the creation of intelligent data databases.
